William Jeff Bates was born July 21, 1848, either in Habersham or White Co., GA and died May 12, 1916 in Clarke Co, GA. He was the son of John Bates and Elizabeth Allen, both of whom are buried in Gilmer Co., GA.
He married Catherine Ruth Maxwell, daughter of William Maxwell and Temperance (Timpy) House, in Clarke Co., GA July 18, 1869.
