Richard W. Saye, 78, died Monday, May 3, 2002.
A lifelong resident of Athens, Mr. Saye was a son of the late Joe A. Saye Jr. and Ethel Richards Saye. He was a graduate of Athens High School and the University of Georgia, where he received bachelor and master's degrees in education. He was employed with Georgia Power for 18 years and then taught and coached at Athens and Clarke Central high schools. He was football coach of Athens High School's 1969 state championship team and retired as vice principal from Cedar Shoals High School. He was a Little League coach and umpire, and a member of Phi Delta Kappa and IBEW. He served in the Athens Civil Service Commission from 1964-74, representing the 1st Ward. He was a member of Young Harris United Methodist Church and attended Oconee Street United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, with the Revs. Carolyn Morris and Lisa Cain officiating. Burial will be in Oconee Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include a sister, Martha Malinowski, Athens, two brothers, Charles A. Saye Sr., Roswell, and Harry H. Saye, Birmingham, Ala.; five nieces; five nephews; and six great-nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
